- You move up once your level target is met
What is Public speaking class?
A public speaking class is structured practice for speaking in front of people with confidence, from breath control through to arranging what you say. At Retora the route runs through 5 levels from Fundamental to Signature, and every session is recorded and reviewed with a trainer.
- Nerves are handled through breathing work and gradual exposure, starting with a small audience and raising the number slowly.
- What you say gets arranged with frames you can call up fast, such as PREP for answering and STAR for telling a story with evidence.
- The recording of each session makes progress visible, including small habits that are hard to feel while you are speaking.
- Moving up a level is decided by a measurable target, such as delivering a 3 to 5 minute speech without stalling midway.

Three pillars, practised in order
The Confidence-Craft-Command method puts the work in an order that makes sense. Mental foundation first, because the best frame in the world falls apart while your breath is still short. Then the craft of arranging content, and last the command of a room.
- 01
Confidence, settling the body first
You practise 4-4-4 breathing, how you stand, and how to recover when your mind suddenly goes blank. Practice starts with a small audience, and the number is raised slowly until being watched stops getting in the way.
- 02
Craft, arranging content so it is easy to follow
You practise frames you can call up within seconds, such as PREP for answering questions and STAR for telling a story. The work also covers an opening that lands, a body in order, and a close that ties it together.
- 03
Craft further, voice and story
You practise vocal variety, pauses given room, and building a short story so listeners stay with you to the last sentence. At this point the recordings start getting used to compare one week against the next.
- 04
Command, reading the room and answering
You practise adjusting tempo as the attention of a room shifts, taking in questions that press without rushing to answer, and recovering the thread when an event slips off plan.
- 05
Recording playback, seeing yourself
Every session is recorded and reviewed with your trainer against timestamped notes. Habits such as a filler word that keeps returning or a voice that drops at the end of a sentence show up most clearly on the recording.
What gets trained in a Retora public speaking class
Speaking with confidence stands on several skills that can be trained separately and then brought together. Here is what this route works on.
The ability to speak off the cuff that looks like a gift almost always stands on a pattern drilled until it became automatic.
- 01
4-4-4 breathing
Breathe in for four counts, hold for four, out for four. Used before you go up and when your mind starts racing, so your voice has steady power behind it.
- 02
The PREP frame
Point, Reason, Example, Point. A four part frame you can call up within seconds, well suited to answering an unexpected question without losing direction.
- 03
The STAR frame
Situation, Task, Action, Result. Used when you need to tell a story with evidence, such as explaining work experience or describing traction to a prospective investor.
- 04
Vocal variety and pause
Rise and fall in the voice, along with pauses given room, make an important sentence sound important. This separates the explanation that gets remembered from the one that passes by.
- 05
Recording playback review
The session recording is reviewed with your trainer against timestamped notes, so what gets fixed is what genuinely happened.
- C1Fundamental
- C2Structured
- C3Compelling
- C4Command
- C5Signature
Moving up is decided by a measurable target at each level, so you know where you stand without guessing.
What you work through on the public speaking route
- Module 0101
Mental and vocal foundation
The earliest part, and the one people most often skip when learning alone. Without steady breath, the best frame in the world falls apart the moment you stand up.
- 4-4-4 breathing
- How you stand and where your weight sits
- Projection from the breath
- Recovering when your mind goes blank
- Gradual exposure from a small audience
- Module 0202
Frames for arranging content
The part that gets what is in your head out in order, including when the situation is sudden and there was no time to prepare notes.
- PREP for answering
- STAR for telling a story with evidence
- Opening, body, close
- Choosing what to cut
- Closing before the time runs out
- Module 0303
Delivery that keeps people with you
The same content can be remembered or forgotten depending on how it is delivered. Here the work is voice, pause, and the shape of a story.
- Vocal variety
- Pauses given room
- Short stories that carry evidence
- Gesture that grows from what you are saying
- Reducing filler words that keep returning
- Module 0404
Facing the room and its questions
The part that most often costs people marks arrives after the presentation ends, when the questions start coming.
- Reading the attention of a room
- Taking a question in before answering
- Separating what you can answer now
- Holding tempo when an event runs late
- Closing with a clear next step
- Module 0505
Recording playback and moving up
The recording becomes the measure, so moving up a level is decided by something visible instead of a feeling that things went better.
- Reading your trainer timestamped notes
- Comparing recordings week to week
- The measurable target at each level
- Preparing for a delivery event
- Building your own practice plan
The starting point that fits you
There is no experience requirement to join. Your starting point is mapped in the initial consultation, and the rough picture looks like this.
- 01
You are just starting and still get nervous
- Cold hands or a shaking voice when you have to speak
- Your mind empties the moment you stand up
- You avoid chances to speak even though you want them
- Start at C1 Fundamental
- 02
You already present and want it better ordered
- Happy to step forward, and the content often wanders
- Your presentations tend to overrun
- The question session feels like the hardest part
- Usually starts at C2 or C3
- 03
You present often and are aiming at bigger rooms
- Comfortable in front of dozens of people
- You want a speaking style that is recognisably yours
- You are aiming at keynotes or bigger stages
- Usually starts at C4 and above
Comparing the routes available to you
All three routes can add to your speaking ability. What separates them is how measurable your progress is and who is listening to how you speak.

When Retora is a poor fit for you
- You want to become a big stage speaker straight away without weekly practice.
- You want a certificate obtainable without meeting the target at each level.
- You are looking for the cheapest option and do not mind who is listening to how you speak.
- You would rather avoid honest notes on your own recording, such as filler words that keep returning or a voice that drops at the end of a sentence.
We say this early so your time and ours are both protected. If any of the points above sit badly, there may be another option that suits you better.
