From nervous in front of five people to holding a room on your own. The route runs through five levels in order, and every session is recorded and reviewed with your trainer so you can see what changed for yourself.
Retora public speaking and MC classes for you in Makassar run online across Indonesia, built around the two contexts that come up most in this city: presenting to regional forums covering the east, and hosting receptions with a long ceremonial sequence. A public speaking class is structured practice for speaking in front of people with confidence, from breath control through to arranging what you say. At Retora the route runs through 5 levels from Fundamental to Signature, and every session is recorded and reviewed with a trainer.
A leveled coaching ladder. You move up a level only after the previous stage is proven solid, so the foundation stays intact.
Speaking with confidence stands on several skills that can be trained separately and then brought together. Here is what this route works on.
Breathe in for four counts, hold for four, out for four. Used before you go up and when your mind starts racing, so your voice has steady power behind it.
Point, Reason, Example, Point. A four part frame you can call up within seconds, well suited to answering an unexpected question without losing direction.
Situation, Task, Action, Result. Used when you need to tell a story with evidence, such as explaining work experience or describing traction to a prospective investor.
Rise and fall in the voice, along with pauses given room, make an important sentence sound important. This separates the explanation that gets remembered from the one that passes by.
The session recording is reviewed with your trainer against timestamped notes, so what gets fixed is what genuinely happened.
Moving up is decided by a measurable target at each level, so you know where you stand without guessing.
The Confidence-Craft-Command method adapts to Makassar. On the Craft side, you practise a presentation frame that stays in order while you carry figures from several provinces into a regional forum. On the Command side, you practise the running order and the linking lines for a long ceremony, including how to hold the tempo when guests arrive in waves. The Confidence-Craft-Command method puts the work in an order that makes sense. Mental foundation first, because the best frame in the world falls apart while your breath is still short. Then the craft of arranging content, and last the command of a room.
You practise 4-4-4 breathing, how you stand, and how to recover when your mind suddenly goes blank. Practice starts with a small audience, and the number is raised slowly until being watched stops getting in the way.
You practise frames you can call up within seconds, such as PREP for answering questions and STAR for telling a story. The work also covers an opening that lands, a body in order, and a close that ties it together.
You practise vocal variety, pauses given room, and building a short story so listeners stay with you to the last sentence. At this point the recordings start getting used to compare one week against the next.
You practise adjusting tempo as the attention of a room shifts, taking in questions that press without rushing to answer, and recovering the thread when an event slips off plan.
Every session is recorded and reviewed with your trainer against timestamped notes. Habits such as a filler word that keeps returning or a voice that drops at the end of a sentence show up most clearly on the recording.
The earliest part, and the one people most often skip when learning alone. Without steady breath, the best frame in the world falls apart the moment you stand up.
The part that gets what is in your head out in order, including when the situation is sudden and there was no time to prepare notes.
The same content can be remembered or forgotten depending on how it is delivered. Here the work is voice, pause, and the shape of a story.
The part that most often costs people marks arrives after the presentation ends, when the questions start coming.
The recording becomes the measure, so moving up a level is decided by something visible instead of a feeling that things went better.
You are ready to start if you often present to forums from across the region, if you are preparing to host a reception for your family or community, or if you want your voice to stay clear in a large room without running out of breath. There is no experience requirement to join. Your starting point is mapped in the initial consultation, and the rough picture looks like this.
Makassar is the gateway to eastern Indonesia, and many companies base their regional meetings here to cover Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua. On the other side of the city, Bugis Makassar wedding receptions are among the longest running ceremonies in the country, often with thousands of guests and a host who moves between Indonesian, Bugis, and Makassarese. Those two contexts shape what speaking skill looks like here.
Companies use Makassar as the base for regional gatherings across the east, from branch meetings and distributor gatherings to annual target briefings spanning several provinces. Presenting in a room like that calls for numbers that hold together and a voice that carries.
A Bugis Makassar wedding runs through many segments, from the mappacci or akkorontigi evening through to welcoming the groom procession. The host holds a long running order that cannot slip out of sequence.
At many receptions the host opens with a Makassarese or Bugis greeting, then moves into Indonesian for guests from out of town. That switch is a skill in itself, and general classes rarely cover it.
Logistics and trade make pitching to partners and prospective buyers a regular part of the week. A clear frame helps when you have only a short window to convince someone.
Every session is recorded and reviewed with a trainer against timestamped notes, so you know exactly which part changed and which part has not.
Each level carries a measurable target, such as delivering a 3 to 5 minute speech without stalling midway. You move up once that target is met.
Practice starts from breathing and gradual exposure, because the best frame in the world falls apart while your breath is still short when you stand up.
PREP and STAR are drilled until they become automatic, so your answer stays in order even when you build it live in front of people.
Retora trainers are experienced and skilled in their field, with real time speaking in public. Matched to your level and schedule availability.
Weekly peer practice and delivery events give you a chance to perform in front of people who are not your classmates, so your practice gets tested closer to the real thing.
Once you complete the programme, you receive a certificate of appreciation from Retora as a record that you finished it. It is recognition from Retora, separate from professional certification issued by official bodies.
You practise the running order and the linking lines for a long reception, including how to say ceremonial terms correctly and how to get back on track when the schedule slips.
Receptions in Makassar often run for hours with guests arriving at different times. You practise breath control and vocal variety so you still sound alive in the third hour, the same way you did in the first ten minutes.
Every session runs over Zoom and is recorded, so you can join from Makassar without travelling. In-person sessions in Makassar have not opened yet, and will follow trainer availability.
An individual coach found through social media usually arranges sessions one at a time with no clear progression. A recorded online course is there whenever you want it, but nobody is listening to how you speak. Retora puts you in a cohort with five levels in order, and records every session so you and your trainer can go through it together. All three routes can add to your speaking ability. What separates them is how measurable your progress is and who is listening to how you speak.
Each session runs 60 minutes. Pricing is the same for online nationwide and on-site across 10 tier-1 cities. Larger packages cost less per session.
Enrolment starts from the smallest package of 4 sessions; single sessions cannot be paid one at a time. Pay in full up front, or in two parts: 50% when classes start and the remaining 50% midway through the package.
60 to 90 minutes per session

The figures below come from the time range of each level in the curriculum, and they are a general picture. Everyone moves at a different pace depending on how often you practise and how often you actually perform.
Your starting point has been mapped. 4-4-4 breathing becomes a habit before you go up. You deliver a 3 minute speech to five people without stalling midway.
The PREP or STAR frame comes up without long thought. You deliver a 10 minute presentation with a clear opening and close, and the recording shows filler words starting to fall away.
Vocal variety and the shape of a story start showing in your delivery. You deliver a 20 minute speech people follow to the end, including the question session after it.
You can face an audience of 50 and above with questions that press, and you begin to have a speaking style people recognise as yours.
We say this early so your time and ours are both protected. If any of the points above sit badly, there may be another option that suits you better.
